Malaga born artist Julio Anaya Cabanding is known for paying homage to the Masters and making them matter as he reframes their work by taking it outdoors and into the streets. After a series of solo presentations in Europe, he recently made his Asian debut with AishoNanzuka gallery in Hong Kong. Titled in honor of Pablo Picasso, who shares his birthplace, the show After 1881continues Cabanding’s mission to show the beauty of classic painters in places where they can be appreciated by everyone and literally be seen in a new light.
Conceived as trompe l'oeil, French for “deceive the eye”, he not only recreates recognized masterpieces almost as dioramas in abandoned, urban areas, but also encases them within found objects like wooden boards or cardboard boxes, as well as on street walls. In addition to Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani, Paul Gauguin, Edgar Degas, Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Tolouse Lautrec, and Claude Monet, Cabanding removes the velvet rope and presents their exquisite art in an earthy format as rugged as the makers themselves. —Sasha Bogojev
