Twist Island: Barry McGee Revisits Ajishima for the Reborn Art Festival
A couple of weeks ago, just ahead of Alleged Gallery's Beautiful Losers Now & Then reunion at the RVCA store in Tokyo, Barry McGee and friends embarked on their annual pilgrimage to the island of Ajishima. Organized by Scooters For Peace and supported by Ratio3, and invited by the Reborn Art Festival taking place on the island between August 3 and September 29, 2019, the gang spent a few days surfing, driving scooters, and creating a monumental piece.
Dotting the high slope overlooking a harbor where tourists dock their boats, clusters of McGee's ineffable visuals are blown up to stunning dimension. With sundry swatches of cloth, the installation incorporates iconic typography with abstract patterns and shapes to enliven McGee's signature characters. Completed over the undulating slope without any strict guidelines, the piece captures the DIY spirit of the San Francisco-based artist's work while reminiscent of his famed cluster installations. In addition, the installation changes in shape and content during festival days, giving new visitors fresh views as they arrive on the island. —Sasha Bogojev
