Artists Wona Bae (South Korea) and Charlie Lawler (Australia) are a collaborative duo based in Melbourne, known internationally for their installations and sculptures that navigate the visceral and symbiotic connections between people and nature. Seeking balance and harmony. Their work combines installation, sculpture, relief, sound, and photographs documenting ephemeral interventions.

For Happy Hour, on view at Backwoods Gallery in the Melbourne neighborhood of Collingwood from Februrary 11—27, Bae and Lawler continue investigations of materiality and abstraction. Fascinated by the healing qualities of charcoal, the pair have created a series of charcoal sculptures and reliefs.Their unconventional use of charcoal reveals itself through multiple surfaces capturing light and shadows to create dynamic artworks that transform in unexpected ways. There is an ethereal quality to these works, emphasised in their physical and spatial nuances. The subtle complexity of   composition and material sits in noticeable contrast to its darkened mass.
