The beauty of Barry McGee's sudden avalanche of output over the last 18 months is the degree to which there is purpose to the density of the production. It feels like the legendary and influential San Francisco artist has something to say, or in the case of his Paris solo show at Perrotin, he has been listening. I'm Listening feels like a call and response with the audience, a wink and nod to graffiti's legacy in his work where it always seems that Barry has been listening even if he has grown older and let the younger guard take over the streets. This presentation is a combination of the chaos of creativity found in illegal works as well as the well-thought ideas of presenting them in a white cube. That is Barry's constant masterstroke: how to make chaos feel clean. —Evan Pricco
