Best of 2013: Beach House "Wishes" dir by Eric Wareheim

Music // Monday, December 16, 2013
Even though their stellar album, "Devotion," was released in 2012, Beach House and director Eric Wareheim created one of the great music videos of 2013 for the track "Wishes." Yes, that Eric. As in Tim & Eric. So you know the video was going to be slightly twisted, funny, and good. And it features Leland Palmer from Twin Peaks riding a horse with fireworks. Well then...

Piracy: Using CDs to Make a Portrait

Music // Wednesday, December 11, 2013
It has been a question that has dogged the Western world for nearly 13 years: what do we do with CDs? Look, we love Catch A Fire as much as the next gal/guy, but really, you can love that no matter what medium. Mirco Pagano and Moreno De Turco have taken the CDs of famous rock icons and made a portrait out of them. Of that particular icon to be exact.

Music Video: Boards of Canada "Reach for the Dead" dir by Neil Krug

Music // Tuesday, November 19, 2013
Boards of Canada's newest LP, Tomorrow's Harvest, is one of our favorite albums of the year. If you are making a holiday wishlist, put this one on it. Neil Krug, who we have featured in the magazine in the past, shot the single artwork and video for the track, "Reach for the Dead," and if you feel like having a desert trip today, this is your chance.

MoMA Poprally Presents: Phoenix “Chloroform” directed by Sofia Coppola

Music // Thursday, November 14, 2013
A little bit of Beatlemania thrown towards Phoenix by way of Sofia Coppola's camera. As part of a MoMA Poprally presents release, Coppola directed a new video for the Phoenix track, "Chloroform," and in an interview with MoMA's Associate Curator in the Department of Film, Anne Mora, Coppola noted "I wanted it to be a fantasy of young girls fixated on a band they love, and try to capture that feeling I remember of seeing bands when I was a kid, when you could totally lose it… and to play up the band as close but out of reach. It’s a fantasy audience, all young, pretty girls."

Arcade Fire "Afterlife" directed by Spike Jonze (Live at the YouTube Music Awards)

Music // Wednesday, November 06, 2013
The YouTube Music Awards premiered this past weekend, streamed live, and was so... well, random, that we couldn't quite pinpoint if we enjoyed ourselves or found ourselves waiting for a disaster. It didn't come, and we really did enjoy the Arcade Fire portion, where they played Reflektor highlight, "Afterlife", done in conjunction with Spike Jonze directing Greta Gerwig to dance. And dance she did.

Arcade Fire's "Reflektor": The Story Behind the Album Cover

Music // Tuesday, November 05, 2013
Over the past two months or so, Arcade Fire's return has been one of the highlights of the fall music release schedule. For us, we have always been huge Arcade Fire fans not just because of the music but because of the care and attention they put into their album art design and entire look for a tour and stage production. Whether having Spike Jonze direct a short in conjunction with The Suburbs LP,  or their new media experiments on their website, the Montreal-band pays close attention to art in relation to their music. Their newest LP, Reflektor, takes this care to a new level...

Music Video: Portugal. The Man "Modern Jesus" (Mike D Remix)

Music // Sunday, November 03, 2013
We have worked with both Portugal. The Man and Mike D's Beastie Boys in the past (the latter an entire issue earlier this year), and we loved that both Mike and the Portugal guys teamed up for a remix of their "Modern Jesus" track. And, we just saw, there is a music video... enjoy some Sunday tunes...
