Holy. Ella & Pitr, who we have mentioned on this site before, just absolutely went big and bonkers in Norway for Nuart 2015 this past week. As Nuart told us, prior to our trip there, "the world’s largest outdoor mural has been completed in Klepp, Rogaland, in just four days! Backed by an army of volunteers, the French artists Ella & Pitr have worked at lightning-quick pace to cover the vast majority of Block Berge Bygg’s 21,000m2 roof on the outskirts of Stavanger and created a beautiful new addition to the Rogaland landscape." They even got the Guinness Book of World Records involved.

The piece, "Lilith and Olaf" depicts a woman curled up on the rooftop with a small figure falling from her fingers. The figure is King Olaf I of Norway, who ruled the country from 995-1000. Various sources cite his birthplace as an islet in Frøylandsvatnet, a lake just metres from Block Berge Bygg’s building.

The finished mural is now visible from planes flying into and out of Sola airport. Control tower staff, pilots and aircraft crew at Sola have already been informed and have begun altering their routes to give passengers the best possible sight of Rogaland's new international landmark.

The mural will be officially ‘opened’ by the Mayor of Klepp, Ane Mari Braut Nese, on Friday 4 September at 16:00. The event is open to everyone with locals and visitors to Nuart Festival alike invited to come and meet the artists and celebrate this new local landmark. Live drone footage of the mural will be beamed to guests and food and drinks will be served throughout the afternoon.

This ambitious world-record attempt marks the beginning of a three-year creative partnership between Nuart and construction company Block Berge Bygg, which will see the two organisations produce arts-based projects in Stavanger and the surrounding Rogaland region.

The partnership is the first of it’s kind between a not-for-profit arts organisation and private sector company in Norway, and one which it’s hoped will encourage others in the county to follow suit.

Ella & Pitr’s mural acts as a companion piece to the Sola airport control tower, also built by Block Berge Bygg and which was painted by the Polish artist M-City as part of Nuart Festival 2013.
