FLATLANDS @ Whitney Museum, NYC
The first experience with Hollywood scenery flats is, to coin the phrase, what it is—flat pieces painted and positioned to appear like one or more buildings, typically a saloon, jailhouse and/or courthouse. But, oh, what action catapults from these two-dimensional flats! Their very emptiness elicits mystery and anticipation as doors burst open, tempers flare, and jealousy rages. The thought-provokingly titled Flatlands exhibition, showing at New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art through April 17, 2016, invites a similar intrigue. Co-curators Laura Phipps and Elisabeth Sherman made a point of visiting many emerging artists and chose to present five painters who work in this illusionistic but plainly animated neighborhood.
