\r\n\tFor a decade between 2001 and 2010, Philadelphia photographer Zoe Strauss<\/a> (b. 1970) showed her photographic works once a year in a public space beneath an I-95 highway overpass in South Philadelphia. In these annual one-day exhibitions, Strauss mounted her color photographs to the concrete bridge supports and viewers could buy photocopies for five dollars. Through portraits and documents of houses and signage, Strauss looked unflinchingly at the economic struggles and hardscrabble lives of residents in her own community and other parts of the United States. She describes her work as "an epic narrative about the beauty and struggle of everyday life." Strauss, a self-taught photographer and political activist, sees her work as a type of social intervention, and she has often used billboards and public meetings as venues. This exhibition is a mid-career retrospective and the first critical assessment of her decade-long project.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tZoe Strauss: 10 Years was organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art with support from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through the Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative. The ICP presentation is supported by the ICP Exhibitions Committee and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.<\/div>\r\n

\r\n\tHere is the press release: On display will be a mix of colour prints as well as his signature wood mounted monochromatic paper pieces telling the story of JR\u02bcs global initiative to employ art as a tool for global communication and understanding. Works within the gallery will highlight various actions JR has accomplished around the globe and will include images from Wrinkles of the City Project in Berlin (spring 2013), his journey to North Korea and new images recreated in 2012 from the 2004-06 project, Portrait of a Generation set in the \u02bbLes Bosquets\u02bc ghetto of Paris. The buildings that featured the original images have since been destroyed so this new series sees the faces looking at each other across an abyss of time and degradation, a mise en abime that speaks to the heart of Paris\u02bc recent history..<\/div>\r\n

\r\n\tOut on the streets of the nation\u02bcs capital, the artist invites the community to become part of public art project, turning each participant\u02bcs portrait and identity into communal artwork. Spurred by his award of 2011 TED prize and subsequent TED Conference, JR called for the creation of a global participatory art platform: INSIDE OUT. The underlying concept of the project is to provide anyone and everyone with the opportunity to share with the world their portrait and a statement of for what they stand. .<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tSince its conception, the INSIDE OUT Project has travelled from Ecuador to Nepal, Mexico to Palestine and most recently to New York inspiring a call to action on various themes including democracy, hope, violence between gangs, immigration, and climate change. To date over 150,000 people from across 108 countries have participated in this epic art project. This October, Londoners will get a chance to create their own black and white portrait in travelling INSIDE OUT trucks where they will be subsequently printed as large posters and pasted onto various iconic London sites.
