This thematic exhibition, based on theoretical concepts of achieving visual equity and superseding artifice through method, presents more than 40 of Mapplethorpe’s images, including silver gelatin prints and Polaroids, which reveal a novel interpretation of the artist’s practice – some are unique works, and many have rarely been shown.<\/p>\r\n

Brian Ulrich photographs large-scale stores in America. In each of his series he extensively researches a singular aspect of this culture such as retail, dark stores, and thrift shops. He traces the trajectory of these places over time: the stores once densely packed with urgent customers now sits hauntingly abandoned on main street and the shining objects are sold at a quarter of their initial price a year later in second-hand shops. By documenting the monopolistic nature of our society Ulrich portrays an honest look at the heart of American economy and culture. Especially poignant are the portraits of shoppers: a pale old woman grabs frowningly at some vegetables while clutching her cart, a beautifully lit average man caresses a shiny fishing pole as he gazes into the distance with religious concentration, a young girl is trying on shoes for her new persona, and a woman wearing a gaudy fur coat greedily drains her sampling of wine. The candid portraits of this system as well as those encapsulated by it gives us a visual representation of the underlying themes of modern America. Ulrich successfully depicts the full story of a nation based upon desire and ownership.<\/p>\r\n

Our newest Juxtapoz Editions<\/a> release is Photography, a 32-page zine featuring some of the most influential names and talents in contemporary photographer. Starting with cover artist Roger Ballen<\/a>, our Photography zine includes Mike Brodie<\/a>, Alex Prager<\/a>, Tim Barber<\/a>, Swampy<\/a>, Jennilee Marigomen<\/a>, Bill Daniel<\/a>, Tod Seelie<\/a>, Daniel Arnold<\/a>, Asger Carlsen<\/a>, Austin McManus<\/a>, Yumiko Utsu, Gregory Halpern, and Peter Sutherland<\/a>.

We discovered the surreal photo and film work of English designer, Mat Maitland, through his multi-layered, brightly colored, eye-popping collaboration with the Japanese clothing brand, Kenzo. His work is filled with enthralling pop complexities referring to fashion, old\u201880s and \u201890s magazines, music, paintings and films. His rich textures and multi-layered compositions frequently consist of disembodied body parts or animals, pianos, clouds and brightly colored elements combined to form enchanting and magnetic images.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Maitland currently works as the creative director of Big Active Design and has worked on music campaigns for Beck, Michael Jackson, Elton John Basement Jazz and more.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
