Susan Lipper's project \u201cGrapevine\u201d is a collision of the photographer's personal experience and the highly unusual town of Grapevine Hollow, West Virginia. She was travelling through on a roadtrip but was so fascinated by the town that she chose to stay for a while. Lipper\u2019s diary is abysmal and bold; with her flash she illuminates the near anarchic town. There are destroyed houses, lots of drinking, strange hunting scenes, KKK members, and religious fanatics. Lipper\u2019s images create a dark narrative of an apocalyptic town.<\/p>\r\n

In his book \u201cYangtze, The Long River\u201d he spent three years winding along the banks of this enormous body of water for his project. The book starts out with a bold fact that the population living along its banks is much greater than the population of the United States at around 450 million people. The documents portray this reality: people timidly standing on a rock debating if they should enter the potentially toxic water, massive architectural projects, and inhabitants performing everyday activities. These images diversely show many aspects of a highly industrial nation, and its interaction with nature. <\/p>\r\n

\r\n\t\tJacob Holdt gained fame for his mammoth work, American Pictures in 1977 - An American odyssey that was created over 5 years and from more than 15.000 photographs taken with a <\/span>cheap pocket camera. Arriving in the States with only $40 in his pocket, Jacob Holdt was <\/span>shocked and fascinated by the social differences he encountered. He ended up staying in the <\/span>USA more than five years, crisscrossing the country by hitchhiking more than 100,000 miles <\/span>and recording his impressions on film. He sold blood plasma twice a week to buy film. He <\/span>stayed in more than 400 homes - from the poorest migrant workers to America's wealthiest <\/span>families (for instance, the Rockefellers). He would live with people who were so hungry they <\/span>ate cat food and garbage, often in rat-infested shacks. <\/span>His work captures the daily struggle of the American underclass and contrasts it with images <\/span>of the life of America's elite. <\/span>During the last 5 years thousands of negatives from Holdt’s extensive archive have been <\/span>rescanned and for the exhibition, we have made a small curation and juxtaposition of works <\/span>from the first edition of American Pictures and new works that have never been displayed <\/span>publicly before. <\/span>Jacob Holdt’s work has an exceptional art historical significance. He has inspired young <\/span>artists all over the world and documented a recent period in American history through a <\/span>unique perspective. Holdt still travels in America and keep coming back to the same people <\/span>that he visited in 1970 (many are now dead). American Pictures is in now published in its 14 <\/span>edition in Danish (An English edition is also available). <\/span>In the light of some of the key issues and challenges facing humanity today, Jacob Holdt’s <\/span>work seems very relevant and important. Gideon Mendel is a fascinating photographer, working uniquely with the medium. I became aware of his work during a recent triennial at the ICP. He has travelled the world to document different communities in the wake of severe flooding. The photographs are stills from his video, which are portraits of people within the community. There is something truly fascinating about watching these video-portraits, the subject has a more active role as they return the viewers gaze, scratch their arms, and slightly fidget in front of Mendel\u2019s camera. Mendel has worked on other projects surrounding poverty and suffering throughout the world, predominantly within Africa. <\/p>\r\n

Gideon Mendel is a fascinating photographer, working uniquely with the medium. I became aware of his work during a recent triennial at the ICP. He has travelled the world to document different communities in the wake of severe flooding. For 20 years, photographer Gerd Ludwig<\/a> has been photographing the aftermath of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster of 1986 in the Ukraine. His extensive collection of images dives deep into multiple effected categories, from the abandoned structures of Chernobyl to the victims and their resulting health issues. The images provide a haunting account of an entire town deserted abruptly and left behind for nature to take over. Ludwig is planning to release his images in a book titledThe Long Shadow of Chernobyl - A Photo Book<\/a> where he also includes redacted CIA documents among the photographs. Through the use of Kickstarter<\/a>, he is hoping to fund the book\u2019s publication with less than two months left to raise the needed funds. \u201cI want this photo book to stand as a complete document of this man-made disaster \u2013to remember the countless victims of Chernobyl, and to warn future generations of the deadly consequences of human hubris,\u201dsays Ludwig.<\/p>\r\n

For 20 years, photographer Gerd Ludwig has been photographing the aftermath of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster of 1986 in the Ukraine. \r\n\tLast week we received an email from Roger Ballen notifying us that his new video “Asylum of Birds” was close to being released and with it the South African artist said, “The video is almost ready; you will not forget it.” And after viewing it several times we agree, it’s unforgettable. Shot by Ben Jay Crossman, the video follows Ballen through Johannesburg to a dark, horror movie-style shack\/building that serves as an asylum for squatters and where a variety of animals run rampant inside (Predominantly birds as the title insinuates). Is this reality or fantasy? Words cannot describe so we suggest you just watch.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tOne piece of New Orleans history that is often overlooked is the photographs taken by E. J. Bellocq<\/a> of the “ladies of the night”in the New Orleans brothel neighborhood of Storyville at the turn of the century (approx. 1895-1910). His intimate and whimsical portraits of Storyville draw the viewer in to a way of life that has since become much more under the radar. Years after Bellocq’s death in 1949, his 8x10 glass negatives of his Storyville portraits were found and bought at auction by a young photographer, Lee Friedlander<\/a>. In 1970, Friedlander made prints of all the negative and displayed them in a show at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan which was curated by photographer and historian John Szarkowski<\/a>. Unfortunately, no gallery or museum exists to permanently display the 89 surviving images and to this day the only collection of his images is the catalogue from Friedlander’s show which is out of print and for sale at a price no less than $90 used. If you have the resources to see these images, take advantage. You won’t be disappointed. <\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tOne piece of New Orleans history that is often overlooked is the photographs taken by E. J. Bellocq of the “ladies of the night”in the New Orleans brothel neighborhood of Storyville at the turn of the century (approx. 1895-1910). \r\n\tA highly overlooked part of America’s history is the Native American genocide. Repercussions are still evident through the marginalization, violence, alcoholism, and terrible living situations on many Native American reservations today. Aaron Huey came as a photojournalist but ended up dedicating himself to the people within the community of Pine Ridge, a place with one of the highest unemployment rates throughout all of America. This is just a symptom of the terrible situation which these people have been subjected to. Car crashes, murders, and alcoholism are more or less common place in this tiny community in South Dakota. Aaron Huey is one of the only photographers around today working in the traditional documentary sense of Lewis Hine, using the medium to promote change and benefit human beings. Huey has been an advocate in bringing these issues to the public through photography and he has also has worked in collaboration with Shepard Fairey to paste murals throughout the town in a project titled “Honor The Treaties”. <\/p>\r\n
