In the photographic works of husband and wife team Formento & Formento<\/a>, it\u2019s easy to see their inspiration and love for theatrical narratives. Echoing the dramatic lighting of Hithcock<\/a>, the depictions of solitude by Edward Hopper<\/a>, and the versatile female roles portrayed by Cindy Sherman<\/a>, each image is it\u2019s own story belonging to each character depicted in the photographs. With their use of derelict backdrops including run down diners, neon signed motels, and remote desert locales, each scene is cinematically sinister. Each photograph seems to show a moment just before or just after a dramatic event where the character is about to make an impacting decision. What has just happened or will happen is left for the viewer to decide. A collection of their work will be exhibited in the Robert Klein Gallery<\/a> in Boston until June 21.<\/p>\r\n

Their compositional style first formed when the pair set out to document the architectural similarities among industrial buildings in the Ruhr Valley of Germany. Over the years, they began photographing all over the world and all different types of structures including water towers, gas tanks, and mine heads. Bernd Becher passed away in 2007, but Hilla continues to display their work. A collection of Becher typologies are currently on display at the Bruce Silverstein Gallery<\/a> along with works by August Sander<\/a> in New York until June 7.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tThe Museum of the City of New York<\/a> will present In a World of Their own: Coney Island Photographs by Aaron Rose, 1961 – 1963 <\/em>opening on May 9 through August 3, 2014. When Aaron Rose began photographing Coney Island in 1961, he bypassed the bluster of the theme parks and sideshows for the more intimate interactions of beach dwellers. Wielding his camera surreptitiously, observing as if from a neighboring blanket, Rose documented a “sun-baked melting pot” of beachgoers of all ages, ethnicities, and walks of life, each one utterly unselfconscious, absorbed in a world of his or her own.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tOne of the earliest art photographers to use C-print paper and chromogenic processing, Rose made images with rosy tans and cool whites that were inspired by the summer skin tones he saw around him. The 70 images on display in this exhibition capture a palpable sense of the manners and mores of 1960s New Yorkers at their most unguarded; as photography critic Vince Aletti noted, “the work’s easy rapport and its casual erotic charge are thrilling and touchingly sweet.” Aaron Rose’s Coney Island is “a place where privacy is a state of mind."<\/p>\r\n

With a shadowy and highly conceptual aesthetic, like the images of dreams upon awakening, Hungarian photographer Noell S. Oszvald<\/a> presents powerful, surreal self-portraits rich in sentiment and composition. At 22-years-old her portfolio, although small, holds the sophistication of a photographer who has been established for years. Her photographic eye is sensational as she manages to capture the purity of a simple composition, allowing herself and her surroundings to be reduced to the relations between geometric shapes and planar backdrops. All of this is accented by her conscious resistance to color, electing instead for a monochromatic palette that allows her viewers to find their own meaning and interpretation. \u201cI don\u2019t want to tell people what to see in my images. This is the reason why I never really write any descriptions other than titles. It shows what I wish to express but everyone is free to figure out what the picture says to them. It\u2019s very interesting to read so many different thoughts about the same piece of work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n
