In 2000, photographer Richard Billingham<\/a> released a book of his photographs titled \u201cRay\u2019s a Laugh\u201d. The images document the everyday life of Billingham\u2019s mother Elizabeth and father Ray. The series reveals Ray\u2019s severe alcoholism and Elizabeth\u2019s obsessive collecting of pets and cheap chachkies paired with the poverty they have been forced to live in as a result of Ray\u2019s addiction. Billingham chose to shoot the images on the cheapest film he could find and used a harsh flash to add to the rawness and candidness of the series. <\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tSince 2008 photographer Gregory Halpern<\/a> has been collecting Californian scenes and portraits for his upcoming book, set to publish with J&L books<\/a> sometime next year. Tentatively, the series is titled “In-Progress Work from California”. The images are of a lyric-documentary style and show both awe and respect for the subjects depicted, gleaming in the infamous California light.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tHalpern also published his book A<\/a><\/em> through J&L Books in 2011, which walks viewers down cinematic streets of the United States Rust Belt and tells a non-linear narrative of the people and animals which inhabit the region.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tGregory Halpern studied at Harvard University, later receiving his MFA at the California College of the Arts. He currently teaches the the Rochester Institute of Technology.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tSince 2008 photographer Gregory Halpern has been collecting Californian scenes and portraits for his upcoming book, set to publish with J&L books sometime next year. Tentatively, the series is titled “In-Progress Work from California”. In his series \u201cGhosts\u201d, South African artist Ralph Ziman draws inspiration from the arms trade and the civilians that are killed as a result of it. In the series, Ziman explains, \u201cI had six Zimbabwean artists use traditional African beads and wire to manufacture several hundred replica beaded guns like AK-47s, and several replica beaded general purpose machine guns (GPMGs), along with ammunition. Upon completion, beaded guns were the subject of a photo-shoot in crime ridden downtown Johannesburg.\u201d The resulting photographs are visually bold and intimidating through the use of a cool, foreboding color palette that draws the viewer in while also creating an uneasy feel.<\/p>\r\n

In his series \u201cGhosts\u201d, South African artist Ralph Ziman draws inspiration from the arms trade and the civilians that are killed as a result of it. \r\n\tHaving grown up in the Democratic Replublic of the Congo, photographer Patrick Willocq<\/a> works to depict the country he loves in a way that provides the viewer with an intimate glimpse into the tribal traditions that are still being practices in DR Congo. In his series “I am Walé Respect Me”, Willocq creates a visual narrative describing the stories of multiple Walés (primiparous nursing mothers). “I've always been fascinated by native tribes because I feel they have a wealth that we have somehow lost. To document this beautiful tribute to motherhood, fertility and femininity, I proposed to some Walés to participate in staged photographs. Each set-up worked as a visual representation of one of the subjects that the Walé would sing about on the day of her release from seclusion. On that day, she sings the story of her own loneliness, and with humor praises her own behavior while discrediting her Walé rivals,” explains Willocq.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The aim of the project is to humanize a vast community through the simplicity of their faces, showing that we come in all shapes, sizes, races, and social strata, thus making it harder for people to discriminate against us. This project exists to spread awareness and understanding about a broader spectrum of human sexuality.
