\r\n\tIn 2010, photographer Joey L. ventured into Brooklyn to photograph the seasonal trick-or-treaters in their seasonal environment. By using black and white imagery, Joey adds a mysteriousness to each subject that he photographs in his series “Halloween in Brooklyn.” He explains on his website, “I wanted to play the anthropologist, and make a field report on this very interesting festival happening in America. I chose to photograph most of my subjects on a black background to focus on my subjects and their costumes.”<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tSheida Soleimani<\/a> is an Iranian-American artist and the daughter of two political refugees. During the revolution that look place in Iran in 1979, her parents were targeted for their activism against the regime, her father escaping across the border and her mother tortured. Taking a critical perspective, Soleimani's series National Anthem<\/em> explores Iran's turbulent past and present through still life and self portrait. "Each of the photographs" she says "addresses a specific time in Iranian history, while alluding to how both the East and West have responded to societal occurrences. Through incorporating multiple layers, the lexicon can be read and refashioned by the viewers’ ideologies, creating images that remain coeval, while acknowledging former origins."<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\t“Minutes to Midnight is an apocalyptic book, but they are real documents, they’re real events, real moments in time that have happened,” explains Magnum photographer Trent Parke. Shot over the course of two years and covering over 90,000 km, Minutes to Midnight is a seductively dark, black and white, enigmatic narrative of Parke’s homeland of Australia. “I’m always trying to channel those personal emotions into my work. That is very different from a lot of documentary photographers who want to depict the city more objectively. For me it is very personal – it’s about what is inside me. I don’t think about what other people will make of it. I shoot for myself,” says Parke. Paying close attention to light, many of the images that comprise Minutes to Midnight<\/em> expose rare moments where extraordinary light conditions assist in giving the photographs surreal and otherworldly qualities. With one particular image, Parke stood on the same street corner three or four times a week at a certain time of day for a month and shot over 100 rolls of film until he caught that one special image. Being sure he was getting what he wanted and also to assist in finding certain ideas to focus more on while on the road, Parke would develop his film daily in caravan parks, in the bush or wherever he could. \r\n\tThe famous Swiss photographer René Burri left us today, at the age of 81 after a long illness. He leaves behind an important body of work on recent history, which has been published in countless newspapers, journals, magazines, exhibitions and books all over the world. Among his most famous photos are portraits of Che Guevara, Pablo Picasso and Le Corbusier, a breathtaking view into the streets of Sao Paolo and his stories of Cuba and Vietnam. Born in 1933 in Zurich, early on he went to Paris whilst studying with Hans Finsler at the Arts and Crafts school of Zurich. After the premature death of one of founders of Magnum, Werner Bischof in 1954, he became a member of the prestigious photo agency in 1956. His world embracing engagement as a photographer and film maker led him to what became his credo, we all live in 'one world'.<\/p>\r\n
