\r\n\tWhen the Circus Chimera came to town, photographer Norma Quintana<\/a> set out to capture the behind-the-scenes lives of the extraordinary performers she saw. For 10 years, Quintana photographed the one-ring circus and the people who made it cohesive. By photographing in black and white, she helps emphasize the majesty and excitement of life in the circus while the actual compositions are poignantly intimate and provide the viewer with glimpses of “normalcy” within a traveling life under the big top. Quintana strips away much of the mystery surrounding the performers’ lives while embracing hints of strangeness that still exist around them and their families who accompany them on their travels. <\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tQuintana’s photogographs were recently published in a book by Damiani and can be purchased here<\/a><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tIn part of the ongoing Pratt Photography Lectures series, Photographer Lucas Foglia will be having a lecture open free to the public on November 12, 2014. Lucas Foglia has held major exhibitions at venues including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Fredericks & Freiser Gallery, New York; and the International Center of Photography, New York. Foglia’s books Natural Order <\/em>and Frontcountry<\/em> were both published by Nazraeli Press to critical acclaim in 2012 and 2014, respectively. The pictures in Frontcountry depict the rural American West in the midst of a recent mining boom. This year Foglia was awarded a fellowship from the Aaron Siskind Foundation.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tIn 1979, photographer Lucian Perkins<\/a>, who was at the time an intern for the Washington Post, found himself in the middle of the fast growing DC punk scene. Capturing the early days of bands such as Bad Brains, Trenchmouth and Teen Idles, Perkins' photos document a pivotal time in the scene's history. The photos encapsulate the energetic youth, the rebellion, and the danger of the time period. The photos are available as a book, titled Hard Art, DC 1979<\/em> and include a narrative by Alec MacKaye and essay by Henry Rollins, both important fixtures of the DC punk scene.<\/p>\r\n

The result is a series of portraits of the two, lightly poking fun at more traditional couple\/ family portraits, but with an obviously bizarre twist. Their background as designers is clear through their use of bold blocks of color and careful placement of objects within the frame.
