\r\n\t\"\"<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tCarolyn Drake<\/a>'s latest photographic book, Wild Pigeon is a collection of photographs compiled from her work on the Uyghurs in Xinjang, China. "Traveling through China’s far western province with a box of prints, a pair of scissors, a container of glue, colored pencils, and a sketchbook, I asked willing collaborators to draw on, reassemble, and use their own tools on my photographs of the region. I hoped that the new images would bring Uyghur perspectives into the work and facilitate a new kind of dialogue with the people I met—one that was face-to-face and tactile, if mostly without words." These pieces, along side straight photographs, come together in a 128 page hard cover book. The photos are compelling on their own, but the addition of layers of drawing and writing adds an entirely new and important perspective to the work, mixing both inside and outside views of the Uyghur community.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tIn the winter of 2014, photographer Wouter Van de Voorde<\/a> set out to photograph the sunrises near his current town of Canberra, Australia. With scenes that look like they are straight out of The NeverEnding Story, Van de Voorde captures the mist filled moment during sunrise that appears as if it would also be an eerie glimpse of dusk. As the early morning light drains the landscape of color before the sun hits it, Van de Voorde photographs the thin layer of frost that engulfs everything in its path, creating an iced silver glow that shines through the foggy terrain.  <\/p>\r\n

Sultan never stopped challenging the conventions of photographic documentation, exploring themes of family, home, and façade throughout his career. Five major bodies of work are represented including: Evidence (1977), made collaboratively with Mike Mandel; Swimmers (1978–81); Pictures from Home (1982–92); The Valley (1998–2003); and Homeland (2006–2009). The show is augmented by a "study hall," with documentation and ephemera providing a glimpse of Sultan’s modes of inquiry as an artist and a teacher.<\/p>\r\n

Moore explains, “The landscape of South Dakota feels like forever. The expanses are stark and severe, simple yet overwhelming. Endless horizons can fuel hope and happiness, but they can also feed a seed of loneliness and isolation, negating the warm feelings expected when thinking about home. From Canada to the Sahara, Eckell captures how each plane is morphing with nature and becoming an intriguing part of the natural landscape in the series titled \u201cHappy End\u201d. Many of the planes he photographed have been abandoned for decades and each crash resulted in a happy ending where the passengers onboard survived. Of her work she says: \"I consistently want to make things that satisfy my sense of beauty. I respond to the tactile nature of things. Another element that pervades it is tension or anxiety. The exhibition is comprised of two bodies of work, a new group of large-scale still lifes, the artist\u2019s most ambitious and complex to date, and a new body of work, Screen Selections, which takes the textile-inspired backdrops Gordon uses in constructing his tableaux as a point of departure.
