\r\n\tGoing beyond the typical wildlife photography we’ve all come to expect, American photographer Zack Seckler<\/a> traveled to the Kalahari Basin in Botswana to create stunning aerial shots of the indigenous wildlife. Traveling in a lightweight plane at low levels, about 500 feet off the ground, Seckler captured the African landscape in an untraditional, abstract photographic style. ‘Being above the ground at such low elevations, and having the ability to precisely maneuver, was like gliding over an enormous painting and being able to create brushstrokes at will,” he says. “As soon as I saw the landscape from above I knew there was potential to create a special body of work.”<\/p>\r\n

Speaking to us about her project Edna Karr<\/em>, the photographer explains, “I've been working on a photo project in New Orleans for a little over a year about the Edna Karr High School marching band, majorettes and dance team. I recently shot a short essay over the past 2 weeks (Mardi Gras parade season) of practice leading up to Nomtoc (I march with the marching band every year). Nomtoc is an all black parade Krewe that started in 1970. Today there are over 400 black male \/ female members. \r\n\tSince emerging in the mid-1990s, the New York–based artist Piotr Ukla\u0144ski (born Poland, 1968) has worked with a wide variety of materials, from eye-popping collages made with pencil shavings and motley assemblages of fiber and crockery to paintings made with tie-dye or globs of brightly colored resin. This exhibition, the first to survey Ukla\u0144ski's photography, locates his work with the camera at the center of his artistic practice. Reveling in moribund or marginal artistic languages from a position at once ironic and sincere, the artist simultaneously subverts and pays homage to defunct modes of expression.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tUkla\u0144ski's underappreciated yet historically significant series The Joy of Photography<\/em> (1997–2007) explores clichés of popular photography using the kitschy subjects and hackneyed effects of Eastman Kodak's how-to manual for the serious amateur. Whereas artists of the 1980s like Richard Prince appropriated such images by rephotographing them to reveal their constructed nature, Ukla\u0144ski remade them in a manner akin to slightly irreverent cover versions of songs that bring out hidden or repressed aspects of his source material. In this way, the artist both acknowledges appropriation's endgame—that there are no new pictures under the sun—while creating a space for the creation of new works.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tTonight in San Frnacisco, Fraenkel Gallery presenting <\/span>Richard Misrach: Being(s) 1975-2015<\/em>, on view from April 9 – May 30, 2015. This survey exhibition traces the appearance of the human figure in Misrach’s photographs across the entire span of his career, from 1975 to the present. Though primarily known as a photographer of the landscape, on occasion Misrach has placed the human figure as a focal point of his images since the mid-1970s. The people who appear in his photographs are rarely portrayed as specific individuals. Rather, they tend to weave through his work as ephemeral markers, a temporary presence in the continuity of the land. The exhibition includes a number of works that have never before been exhibited or published: a 1976 self-portrait in White Sands, New Mexico; disorienting new images from his <\/span>Color Reverseseries<\/em>; large-format photographs from the <\/span>On the Beach<\/em> project, and a remarkable 14-foot panorama of the U.S. border fence separating Tijuana, Mexico, from California.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This survey exhibition traces the appearance of the human figure in Misrach’s photographs across the entire span of his career, from 1975 to the present. \r\n\tThe Dalton Highway is a 414 mile long road in Alaska, running from just north of Fairbanks to the Prudhoe Bay Oil Field near the Arctic Ocean. Photographer Ben Huff<\/a> became fascinated with the road after moving to Fairbanks and exploring the area on a short trip to the Arctic Circle. The project, which also exists as a book<\/a>, features gritty landscapes and portraits, focusing on the trucks and drivers who make the trip north regularly. Huff calls the results “and untreated exploration of people and place” with an “apocalyptic kind of look.” The photos are currently being exhibited at the Museum of the North in Fairbanks, AK and will be on display through the summer.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
