\r\n\tDating back to 2009, photographer Melissa Spitz <\/a>has been making photographs of her mentally ill mother, to what now has become an empowering body of work entitled You Have Nothing to Worry About<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\t“Her diagnoses change frequently—from alcoholism to dissociative identity disorder—and my relationship with her has been fraught with animosity for as long as I can remember. I am fully aware that my mother thrives on being the center of attention and that, at times, our portrait sessions encourage her erratic behavior,” says the artist in her description of the series.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tThe photographs are touching, sensitive, yet incredibly powerful. They show a true sense of a mother-daughter relationship; an honest connection, and an emotional response towards each other. Spitz mentions that the photographs function like an ongoing conversation.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tThe artist has created a visually pleasing Instagram page using images from her project. Follow her account <\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tThanks to the Internet, photographers Johann Bouché-Pillon<\/a> and Gabi Pérez<\/a> stumbled upon each other’s work, making it possible to meet via e-mail and exchange ideas. The two created a very simple collaboration where they paired already-made photographs into diptychs that mirrored well together. These mostly consisting of color coordination and shapes. Some of the images were rotated vertically in order to keep a consistency in the body of work. There is no particular storyline, being that the idea was mostly to play with color tones and figures that would compliment each other.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tGabi Pérez, who made the images on the left-hand side, works and lives in New York City. Johann Bouché-Pillon, whose images are on the right, is currently based in Paris, France.

\r\n\tOver the last 15 years, Ryan McGinley’s photographs have come to symbolise what is now known as the ‘hipster’ or ‘indie’ generation. Ryan McGinley came to adulthood in the late ’90s, in the then still unruly skateboard and graffiti culture of the Lower East Side area of New York’s Downtown Manhattan. He had his first encounter with a camera as a graphic design student in 1997 and immediately began obsessively photographing everything in sight. He was a ‘photoblogger’ avant la lettre, producing paper ‘zines’ for distribution among his friends. At first, his pictures showed his own immediate world: friends with whom he partied the night away, the art scene in which he moved, the urban subculture of which he was part, and the music world in which he hung out. He focused on what he saw around him, presenting the sex, the drugs, the high jinks, the petty crime and the night life just as it was. His pictures were shot in living rooms, bathrooms and railway tunnels, on roofs, in cafes and out on the streets.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tNudity was always a regular feature, but in the early 00s it became Ryan McGinley’s main subject. The shift was triggered by a trip he took to the state of Vermont in 2003. He spent the summer with a group of friends, staying at a holiday home lent to him by a collector friend and took photographs of his companions in its rural surroundings. The nudity of the models, the ‘idyllic’ landscape and the carefree and ebullient atmosphere of the resulting snapshot-like photographs were to become the components of McGinley’s signature style.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tThe relaxed playfulness of the images suggests complete spontaneity. And to some extent the poses were indeed spontaneous. But they always sprang from an idea and a manipulated situation. McGinley compares it to skateboarding, where endless practice is required to make a trick look smooth and completely mastered. At that time, Ryan McGinley was taking hundreds of photographs to find out what worked and how to capture a situation in the most striking image. After that, it was chance, the unexpected, and on-the-spot improvisation that produced ‘the crucial moment’: something that resembles Henri Cartier-Bresson’s ‘decisive moment’, but is the product of a situation generated by endless repetition over time. The images are therefore both staged and spontaneous.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tThe trip to Vermont showed what could be achieved and led the way to five ‘summer road trips’, ranging across the United States and producing the images at the heart of McGinley’s oeuvre. These trips were undertaken between 2005 and 2010 and involved groups of hipsters travelling in a couple of vans. Initially, the participants were simply McGinley’s close friends but later they included models – preferably ‘ordinary’-looking boys and girls – scouted via studio sessions. For his ‘Moonmilk’ series, McGinley worked for some time in a cave in Idaho, experimenting with coloured lights in the cavernous spaces. In another series, he photographed fans at Morrissey concerts. Then, around 2010, there was a series of portraits with wild animals. In ‘YEARBOOK’ – to be included in the show at Kunsthal KAdE –McGinley displays hundreds of his studio portraits in the form of an installation covering entire walls.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tThe world of Ryan McGinley is a pseudo-reality: a modern-day paradise that is happy, liberated, carefree, naughty, free-spirited and bohemian. Despite the occasional sharp edge – the odd bruise or black eye – it is never dreary or depressing. More like Johan van der Keuken’s ‘Wij zijn 17’ (‘We are 17’) or Ed van der Elsken’s ‘Love on the Left Bank’ than Nan Goldin’s grim picture of the Lower East Side underground in the 1980s or Larry Clark’s merciless exploration of a self-destructive group of youngsters in Tulsa (Oklahoma) in the 1970s. The varied American landscape that McGinley uses as a setting is not just a backdrop; he sees its presence as a homage to his country’s wealth of stunning natural environments. The White Sands desert in New Mexico is one of his favourite places; he returns to it constantly and it has never been omitted from any of his road trips.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tMovement is a striking feature of his photographs. His models are frequently caught in motion: running, falling, dancing, tumbling, flailing their limbs, swimming or climbing. The action gives the images a cinematic quality. It creates not only a sense of spontaneity, but greater scope for contingency, endowing the photographs with a dynamism impossible to achieve in fully staged fixed poses.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tThe forthcoming overview at Kunsthal KAdE is to include around 80 works on loan from private collections in the Netherlands, England, France, Germany, Belgium, Norway, Austria and Ireland. The ‘YEARBOOK’ installation will fill a single wall in the main gallery. Sigur Ros’s music video ‘Varúð’, directed by Ryan McGinley, can be viewed in the video projection space and a selection of ‘behind the scenes’ shots will be on display in the separate education area. \r\n\tKunsthal KAdE’s new summer exhibition opening tomorrow, May 30th, is a major overview of work by American photographer Ryan McGinley (b. 1977, New Jersey, US). \r\n\tOpening on May 29th and up until May 31st, a collection of photographs by photographer Paul Zone<\/a> will be on display at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art’s Project Space in New York. The exhibition, titled “Growing Up in the New York Underground: From Glam to Punk”, depicts the changing music scene in 1970’s NYC. With images of icons such as Lou Reed, Alice Cooper, and Patti Smith, the exhibition captures the underground music scene that shot such individuals to stardom. The show is serving as a kickoff for the release of Zone’s photo memoir “Playground” which contains an even more extensive collection of his photographs and a forward by Debbie Harry and Chris Stein. \r\n\tOpening on May 29th and up until May 31st, a collection of photographs by photographer Paul Zone will be on display at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art’s Project Space in New York. \r\n\tOver the years, photographer and filmmaker Annie Flanagan<\/a> has produced several documental photographic series. She began a project entitled Hey, Best Friend!<\/em> in September of 2012, back when she resided in Syracuse, NY. This series documents the friendship of Nekqua and Brittney. Two best friends living on the South Side of Syracuse, NY. The story captures obstacles such as sexual abuse, death, motherhood, amongst other traumas and themes seen in an earlier project by Annie entitled Love, Hannah<\/em>—where Annie photographs the relationship between her and her best friend; friendship and hardship being a common theme in her work.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tThis past June, Annie was able to visit Brittney in her home in Antwerp, NY where she lives with Sandra, Jasmine (Sandra's 15-year-old daughter) and Jasmine's younger brother. On March 27th, 2015, Jasmine died when her home caught fire. Sandra was able to save Jasmine's 7-year-old brother and herself by breaking open a window with her bare arm.<\/p>\r\n

Leavenworth who was born in Georgia, raised in Connecticut, has always had an urge to experience and explore the southern region. In October 2009 he made his first trip down and continued making trips many years after. Explaining to ThisisaCult<\/a> about his goal for his audience he said,” My goal is for the viewer to witness a personal narrative unfolding and something larger and recognizable; a view of our contemporary American landscape. I hope the viewer observes an admiration for the way things are, the trepidation in initiating a conversation in an exponentially isolated world, and a struggle to identify oneself and communicate.
