\r\n\tNot old enough to drink in the Unites States yet, but able to get hired and travel around shooting photographs of musicians, Denver-based, Luca Venter<\/a> is a young talent worth keeping an close eye on. In an interview with VSCO, Venter explains that in his initial years of photography instead of waiting for others to get in contact, he would himself reach out to a number of people with the only thing to lose was being told no. “When I was 15, I started contacting bands that I wanted to photograph to build up my portfolio. Looking back at what my portfolio looked like when I was 15, I'm really surprised that anyone was even remotely keen on letting me take their photos. Not sure how I managed that. Fortunately, as I've gotten a bit older, I've been able to build some good relationships with bands, managers, and labels,” Venter explains. Often having a dreamlike quality with a great eye for composition, this young photographer’s practice is only really For the Nu Project<\/a>, photographers Matt Blum and Katy Kessler took a series of \u201chonest\u201d nude portraits of ordinary women, whom they nickname \u201cun-models.\u201d The project is an effort to highlight the beauty of all bodies, especially those that don\u2019t fit into society\u2019s strict definition of what is beautiful. The portraits use minimal makeup and \u201cno glamour.\u201d So far, Blum and Kessler have published one book of portraits, The Nu Project: Beauty in Every Body<\/a><\/em>, and are currently raising funds to publish their second volume<\/a>. For the book, Blum and Kessler do not screen the un-models for appearance and Blum actually doesn\u2019t see images of the women before he shows up at their home for the photo shoot. During the shoots, the focus is on \u201csubjects and their personalities, spaces, insecurities and quirks.\u201d So far over 250 women from North and South America and Europe have posed for the For the Nu Project, photographers Matt Blum and Katy Kessler took a series of \u201chonest\u201d nude portraits of ordinary women, whom they nickname \u201cun-models.\u201d The project is an effort to highlight the beauty of all bodies, especially those that don\u2019t fit into society\u2019s strict definition of what is beautiful. \r\n\tChicago’s Museum of Contemporary Photography is currently displaying photographs from North Korea in an exhibition<\/a> that contrasts the country’s official representations with uncommissioned media from photojournalists and artists. The show offers rare views of the country from international photojournalists but because emerging media is so tightly controlled, the contrast itself is perhaps the most illustrative aspect of the show. It includes work from Seung Woo Back, Pierre Bessard, Philippe Chancel, David Guttenfelder, Ari Hatsuzawa, Suntag Noh, João Rocha, Matja\u017e Tan\u010di\u010d, Tomas van Houtryve, Marie Voignier, Alice Wielinga and Hyounsang Yoo.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tThe Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), or North Korea, has been called the Hermit Kingdom, as it is one of the most reclusive states in the world. North Korea’s citizens are not allowed to travel abroad, there is no Internet connection to the outside world, and the flow of information is almost completely controlled by the government. This exhibition will be divided into two main sections: one showing the government’s official version of North Korea, while the other offers the alternative view of the country. Imagery distributed through official channels, such as the country’s press agency KCNA, which is based in Japan, and those photographed by tourists on state-controlled tours will offer an official view. These official images will be juxtaposed with a non-controlled stream of images coming out of the country: photographs produced by international photojournalists from within the nation, and international artists using photography and video to directly address North Korea.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tSplitting his time between London and Portland, Maine, Tom Butler<\/a> is multi-disciplinary artist who predominantly works with paintings and drawing applying them to found victorian cabinet cards. Speaking about his work the artists explains, "I am fascinated by the process of Conspicuous Invisibility: the simultaneous human desire to both hide and perform. In a visual way, I collect memories, thresholds and hiding places and attempt to re-manufacture them. My work expresses my natural inclination towards introversion and the opposition of displaying artwork essentially about hiding.” Butler received an MFA at Slade School of Fine Art and has been showing his work in galleries since 2005.
