A debut curatorial collaboration between Red Hook Labs and global media platform Nataal, the show encompasses documentary, fashion and portrait photography. Collected<\/em>, the eighth exhibition at Pier 24<\/a> Photography currently on display, brings together photographs from the Pilara Foundation and other Bay Area collections.Nine collectors were invited to select works from their holdings that reflect their interests in the medium. The exhibition thus offers a lens on various collecting approaches, with some collectors focusing on the work of particular artists or on specific art historical movements or themes, and others developing their own criteria, whether deliberately or unconsciously. Spanning the last hundred years of the medium, the selections on view here reflect each collector\u2019s strong understanding of photography while also highlighting the singular sensibilities guiding the deeply personal act of collecting. Yet for all their variety, the assembled photographs also reveal the shared traits that unite all passionate collectors: curiosity and discipline paired with rigorous study and close looking.<\/p>\r\n Maraini also spent a significant amount of time photographing the Hindu Kush mountain ranges of Central Asia, in Southeast Asia and the southern regions of Italy. An anthropologist and enthnographer, Maraini fought to strengthen the ties between Japan and Italy. After the Italians signed an armistice with the allies in WWII, the Japanese authorities asked him and his wife to sign an act of allegiance to Mussolini's puppet, the Republic of Salo. They refused and were interned with their daughters in a concentration camp at Nagoya for two years. intricate and fragmented portrait, alive to all the rifts and paradoxes of this important and much contested place.<\/p>\r\n Between 2009 and 2012, the twelve artists spent extended periods in Israel and the West Bank, free to approach their subjects as they chose. They travelled throughout the region and engaged with a remarkable variety of individuals and communities. While the exhibition presents twelve distinct perspectives, several key themes emerged, such as family, identity, home, and landscape and the environment. At the same time, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is impossible to ignore and leaves its mark on many of the images, often in ways that are not immediately apparent.<\/p>\r\n The exhibition challenges viewers to go beyond the polarizing narratives and familiar images of the region found in mainstream media. During the 1960s and 1970s, Japan was thrust into the postmodern era without having achieved a mature stage of modernity, pursuing industrialized and consumer capitalism while the development of its mass media continued to accelerate. The Tokyo landscape was suddenly and drastically altered \u2013 mechanically reproduced images, piles of neatly stacked merchandise, highly stylized women in overtly sexual advertisements, and the loneliness of the \u201cmodern man\u201d were everyday scenes from the city\u2019s utopian vision for economic and cultural progress. The primary method for reproducing this profusion of posters, magazines and billboards was the halftone printing process, where a screen of small dots (\u201cmesh\u201d) are printed in layers to produce color images. This world, saturated in images, is Moriyama\u2019s Meshed World. Moriyama\u2019s photos show optimistic advertisements depicting images of Western celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot, borrowed and stylized to the point where they begin to taken on Japanese anime features. However, sinister feelings of boredom and loneliness lurk in the shadows of these bright lights and excitement for the pursuit of change and economic growth.
