 Mary Ellen Mark, who passed away last year, is known for her photojournalism, documentary photography, and notably, her portraiture. Attitude: Portraits by Mary Ellen Mark<\/em>, 1964\u20132015 is curated by Melissa Harris, editor-at-large, Aperture Foundation, who notes, \u201cIn choosing the images from among many of her key series, I was defining attitude in terms of a sense of self, a kind of awareness and confidence, self-possession.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

The exhibition surveys highlights from many of her series including Indian Circus<\/em>, humorous and bizarre shots of performers and contortionists and their animals from India\u2019s liveliest circuses; and Falkland Road<\/em>, gritty images of prostitutes and their patrons on a notorious street in Bombay. Selections from Twins and Prom<\/em> explore \u2013 in large format Polaroids \u2013 siblings at the Twins Days Festival in Twinsburg, Ohio, and prom-goers across the U.S. Images from Mark\u2019s work for LIFE<\/em> magazine about the Damms, a homeless family in California, express the grim reality of survival on spare change and welfare checks.<\/p>\r\n

Also on view will be work from Streetwise<\/em>, which portrays homeless and troubled youth in Seattle including a girl named Tiny. Work from Tiny: Streetwise Revisited<\/em>, her series completed in 2015, encapsulates Mark\u2019s 30-plus years photographing Tiny, now a middle-aged mother of ten. Ball's photos were then handed off to production studio Ink where they were able to restore the computers via digital retouching to their original form. These images transform these archaic machines and turn them into what look like contemporary sculptures. Ironically, none of these computers have enough memory to store their own portraits.<\/p>\r\n

From May 3rd \u2013 June 5th 2016, Austere will be home to the Impossible LA Pop-Up, furnished by Amsterdam Modern and Impossible. Nathaniel Mary Quinn's works on paper exemplify a singular approach to image-making. His figurative compositions are intimate, psychologically-charged portraits influenced by the artist's own past experiences as well as contemporary imagery. Faces are fractured with composite features and spliced with colorful patterns and other graphic elements. Foregoing any preparatory drawings, these works are a result of the artist's intuitive working method and technical virtuosity with the materials. Using charcoal, oil-paint, paint-stick, gouache and oil pastel, Quinn's meticulously rendered compositions appear as if physically collaged from various sourced images.<\/p>\r\n

Quinn's works are deeply informed by his personal history growing up in Chicago's South Side. His childhood experiences at the Robert Taylor Homes, a place of violence, abandonment and poverty, are embedded into his early narrative. Highlights<\/em> features portraits of individuals from the artist's past, who, through various means, were able to make it out of the notorious public housing project. These compositions give shape to Quinn's memories, the figures from his past finding their way from the subconscious to the paper. Saater is a documentary photographer\/ photojournalist and videographer. He focuses on reportage, and social\/cultural issues. In December 2009 he was invited by the British Council to participate in a photography project called \u201cMy Home is Here,\u201d which involved traveling around Nigeria to produce images of Climate Change there. Roger Steffens (b. 1942) is a Brooklyn, New York-born actor, author, lecturer, reggae archivist, photographer and producer. Steffens began photographing while serving in the Psychological Operations division in Vietnam, a period during which he began a journalistic record of his surroundings marked by an increasingly psychedelic lens. Steffens photographed extensively throughout his life amassing an archive of over 300,000 images \u2013 the near entirety of which had never been seen publicly before 2013 \u2013 when his children, Kate and Devon Steffens, began publishing the photos on Instagram under the name The Family Acid.<\/a><\/p>\r\n

The Family Acid<\/em> is the first book of Steffens\u2019 photographs. Spanning 40 years of Steffens\u2019 life and culled from over 40,000 chrome photographs, The Family Acid<\/em> presents his often transcendent vision and life as a psychedelic pioneer on the order of Timothy Leary and Hunter S Thompson beginning with his work in Vietnam and moving through his ever revolving circle of friends and characters made up of Rastas, beatniks, musicians, artists, gonzo journalists, his family, and himself. The portraits, scenes, and freewheeling experimentation with the medium of photography coalesce into a body of work that both parallels and defines the countercultural ethos of Steffens\u2019 generation.<\/p>\r\n

This Spring 2016, HUF has collaborated with Roger Steffens and The Family Acid on a series of four photo tees<\/a> featuring iconic works that span various periods throughout the photographer\u2019s life.<\/p>\r\n
