Largely made outside of a studio, Marcelle\u2019s images seem to make props out of anything and employ ranges of colors that had not yet existed. The people in Marcelle\u2019s images often are masked, covered or otherwise hidden; likewise, objects may be refracted, floating\u2014or both. The work plays with the duality between what is real and what is not; tight compositions keep a close grasp on the viewer\u2019s experience of the world that is shown, but ubiquitous use of lights and filters reference a visual tradition of the theater, and further, the way an image performs a reality. Born in New Jersey and currently based in Brooklyn, Marcelle received his MFA from Yale in 2013. He has created images for several different publications including The New Yorker, The New York Times, and Vice Magazine.<\/p>\r\n

Similar to the initial showing, which took place at the Dia Art Foundation in 1989, this exhibition is split into three sections: Home Front<\/em>, Homeless<\/em>: The Street and Other Venues<\/em>, and City: Visions and Revisions<\/em>. The current focus is the latter section, which centers around urbanism and development.
What sets this showing apart from Rosler\u2019s previous showings is that this will include a series of town hall discussions on the perils of city living today. These talks will occur ever Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 8PM for the rest of June. The topics for each of these is described on the Mitchell-Innes & Nash<\/a> website. City-dwellers may find this exhibit to be either an eye-opening experience or a confirmation of their struggles.<\/p>\r\n

 Oglander recently organized images his Craigslist collection into a photo book Mirrors<\/a><\/em>. The artist describes the publication as \u201crefocusing the essence of the project\u2019s emergent themes (anonymity, fragmented realities, voyeurism, notions of truth, and crowd sourcing) the book distills Oglander's project down from a diffuse cloud of images-of-objects-that-cast-images, back again to object itself. The images collected here pull the viewers gaze through the page to the cross-section of two narrow planes of someone\u2019s reality. She finds candids and snapshots more interesting than photographs taken by professionals. Through these pictures, she hopes \u201cto curate a collection of imagery shot by servicemen and women who served in Vietnam.\u201d
Rennick was first inspired to initiate this project when her friend\u2019s father, a Vietnam veteran, passed away, leaving behind a box of unseen photographs taken during the conflict. He had suffered from PTSD as a result of his involvement in the War, and therefore he rarely spoke of his experiences in Vietnam while he was alive. The pictures helped tell his untold stories of the War.<\/p>\r\n

Rennick then set out through The Vietnam Slide Project<\/a> to collect these untold stories through photographs and slides that have long been stored away and untouched. Rennick\u2019s particular interest in slides stems from both her appeal to their aesthetic and the fact that they were taken with the intention of being shown to a group of people.

After spending time in Italy, Rotty gathered conceptual and figurative memories and related this to her own heritage. The icons and people are projected in intimate spaces blending both present and past. Rotty states, \"My work aims to explore the tension between resistance and acceptance of change. I am interested in the relationship between maintaining control, versus surrendering to process and material. I am inspired by the dialogue between two forces, their influence on each other, and the impermanence of it all.\"<\/p>\r\n

But venturing out towards the horizon isn\u2019t only an American fascination, it\u2019s intrinsic to us as humans. We want to know more, explore and find out why we are here and what else is out there. As Todd Blubaugh<\/a> so effectively communicates in the story of his journey across the country, it\u2019s vital for us to remain in motion, whether physically, emotionally, or spiritually. The motorcycle is his vehicle of choice, but, as Todd explains, \u201cthe bigger point is movement and what we learn during our displacement.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

In 2013, one week before Todd was scheduled to leave on a motorbike trip across the country, both parents were killed in an automobile accident in Kansas. After flying back to Seattle from the funeral, Todd remembers, \u201cstaggering in an emotional tempest, I packed my bike with tools and camera gear and left.\u201d The photographic and written account of his encounters along the way are documented in his new book, Too Far Gone<\/em>. \u201cTraveling by motorbike can be a deeply spiritual experience,\u201d Todd relates, \u201cThere are no distractions\u2014the only conversation to be shared is between you and the highway. Alex Nicholson:<\/em> When did you first starting taking photos?
<\/strong>Todd Blubaugh:<\/em> My mom, who was an artist, introduced me to my first camera in junior high and by high school, I was hooked. It just made a lot of sense after that.<\/p>\r\n

How about your first bike?
<\/strong>My dad made me a deal, he would let me have one if I agreed to mow some lawns in the neighborhood. He got a little Kawasaki KE100 from a friend of his and that was all it took. I could get around anywhere I wanted to, I explored all the county roads behind the house. Me and my friends at that point were pretty unstoppable. Your first step of independence is a powerful little pill.<\/p>\r\n

As someone who studied visual arts in college, was that something you always wanted to pursue?
<\/strong>I started in film then changed to photography, then illustration and design. My degree went all over the place until I graduated in something called visual concepts, which was a lot of everything.<\/p>\r\n

That helped you get the job in Seattle?
<\/strong>Yeah, it did. Right after school, I applied for a job at a company I really wanted to be a part of because they specialized in outdoor sports. I did that for almost seven years. I ended up doing more studio photography than anything in that job. I never really got to be in the field as much as I wanted. As a creative, you rarely get to do the things you want, as the process demands you to compromise.<\/p>\r\n
