Every once and a while it\u2019s important to remember the modest roots of some of the biggest wave-makers in the photographic world. Although he seems to be a staple in every photographer\u2019s mental archive of notable names these days (or at the very least, he should be), Arnold wasn\u2019t always a memorable face in the world of still imagery. He only rose to fame in May of 2014 after he decided to sell prints from his Instagram account to avoid eviction. At the time, he had just $90 in his bank account, but within the day he had made $15k through his work alone. Today, the New York based photographer has a following of about 124k on Instagram, many collectors in pursuit of his prints and continues to release new work regularly. He transformed his circumstances by simply capturing his surroundings \u2013 having gone from practically homeless to photographing the Met Gala. Despite his rise to fame, he still shoots solely 35mm film or uses his iPhone camera. Using small lights and a camera\u2019s open shutter, they captured the motions of workers, including handkerchief folders and bricklayers. Their original motive for taking the photos was to aid in revising the workers\u2019 processes in order to increase their productivity and simplify their tasks. Man Ray was the first to bring light painting into the art world. It was almost natural for him to be that first photographer to use it, as this was just one of many avant-garde styles he explored as an artist. Considering himself first and foremost a painter before any other art medium, Man Ray approached light painting with the same enthusiasm. His series, \u201cSpace Writing,\u201d is his exploration of the style and was completed in 1935. It is now considered a signature piece of Man Ray\u2019s career. Until 2009, many believes the swirls and loops of light-writing in Man Ray\u2019s photographs were just random movements. However, a photographer named Ellen Carey recently discovered, by holding up a mirror to the images, that the drawing was actually Man Ray\u2019s signature. Self-taught photographer Gjon Mili was one of the first to use electronic flash and stroboscopic light to create interesting photographs. His images revealed the beauty and flow of movement. He captured many kinetic subjects, such as dancers, jugglers, musicians, and figure skaters. Using his photography, Mili was able to study peoples\u2019 motions. Mili\u2019s most famous photograph was taken in the 1940s when he attached small lights to the skates of figure skaters and took a long exposure of them in motion. The photograph is still recognized to this day.<\/p>\r\n

Mapplethorpe was always a city boy: born in Queens, New York City, he didn\u2019t travel very far to attend college at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, majoring in Graphic Arts. He dropped out of the school in 1969 before completing his degree. Mapplethorpe received his first Polaroid camera in the early 1970s and began taking self-portraits and portraits of his friends and acquaintances in the art world. A few years later, he began shooting with a Hasselblad medium-format camera, expanding his subjects to an even wider circle of friends and acquaintances. With his Hasselblad in hand, Mapplethorpe ventured into the underground BDSM scene of New York City. These photographs, labelled XPortfolio<\/em>, ultimately led to a widespread debate over public funding of controversial artwork in the late 1980s and early 1990s. By the 1980s, Mapplethorpe\u2019s work had transformed into shooting more elegantly-posed subjects \u2013 many of them nude \u2013 as well as studies of flowers and celebrity portraits. Of his nude portraits, many remark that they have an almost statuesque quality. The study of the subject\u2019s figure is so intense, it mimics ancient fine art. The floral still-lifes represent the transient element of time and life. In these photographs, Mapplethorpe played around with new styles of lighting in order to highlight key, minute details of his seemingly-simple subjects. In 1988, as his health began a downward spiral due to HIV\/AIDS, Mapplethorpe established a foundation in his name that would protect his work, promote his legacy, and support the causes that he cared about. That same year, he asked Patricia Morrisroe to write his biography, which ended up incorporating over 300 interviews with celebrities, critics, lovers, and Mapplethorpe himself. The exhibits at the LACMA and the J. Paul Getty Museum focus on different areas of Mapplethorpe\u2019s varied and interesting work, and they are complementary to one another. Mapplethorpe\u2019s work will be on view at both locations until July 31st.<\/p>\r\n

The peripheral communities of Bolder\u0101ja and Daugavgr\u012bva were once significant in the development of the nation, but now carry a post-soviet gloom of neglect. \u200bStrokins states, '\"For many centuries the only road that connected Riga with the whole region of Kurzeme ran through these dune territories.\u200b The Daugavgr\u012bva Fortress \u200bonce erected to protect Riga from enemy ships\u200b, has now become obsolete. By the end of WWII Daugavgr\u012bva became a closed territory used by the Soviet Naval Forces\u200b. Even after the Latvian independence, a lingering Russian presence is still abundant in this community.\u200b \u200b'\u200bTheir mostly Russian-speaking inhabitants \u200b[are] stuck somewhere between the Soviet past and the ever-changing present. Bolder\u0101ja has one of the closest beaches of the Baltic Sea and yet most of the inhabitants of Riga choose to ignore it and search for resorts, sanatoriums and plots of land for their summer houses elsewhere.\u200b'\" Strokins frames a contemporary look on this region and its people throughout its seasonal changes.<\/p>\r\n

The philosophy of the artwork relates to the idea of the sacred feminine. By holding mirrors, we hope to suggest that women are a reflection and embodiment of nature, the sun, the sky and the land. We want to express the belief that we will rely upon the strength, intuition and wisdom of progressive and enlightened women to find our place in nature and to regain the balance within it. The mirrors communicate that we are a reflection of ourselves, each other, and of, the world that surrounds us. The woman becomes the future and the future becomes the woman.<\/p>\r\n

Inclusion, participation and interactivity are and always have been, an integral aspect of Spencer\u2019s art. He cannot make his art without the collaboration of the participants. The experience of the individual posing in a mass group nude art installation is as varied as the body types that exist within the works. Everyone has their own experience and story that they bring to the moment and the story and interactivity is always a subtext of the work at large. Spencer\u2019s art provides a unique opportunity for artists and non-artists alike to take part in the creation of a contemporary work of installation\/performance art and to become the medium itself. The way in which the participants take part in this collective artwork has a transformational effect both on the individual and the collective.<\/p>\r\n

Republicans, Democrats and all other political parties were welcome to take part reflecting their anger through art against the hateful repressive rhetoric of many in the Republican Party towards women and minorities. Trump and Pence are giving many in America the belief that is OK to hate. Over 1800 women signed up for the 100 spaces to bare all in this heightened arena of politics and protest and this number alone is a testament to their bravery and desire for change. They did not know where they were going to pose when they signed up to be part of this art action, it could have been in the epicenter of the security zone, but they still wanted to participate. Our concept was for 100 women to pose with 100 mirrors. Our location was secret to keep the women safe and would only allow for a small number of participants. But 1800 women would have shown up naked in front on the steps of the convention to make art with what may be the most controversial subject in this presidential race, a woman\u2019s body.<\/p>\r\n
