Who Shot Sports: A Photographic History<\/em>, 1843 to the Present brings together roughly 230 works from 170 photographers to drive home the point that there is more to sports photography than simply capturing an action shot. The photographs comprising this collection show the abundance of adrenaline and emotions that characterize professional sports. Gail Buckland returned to the museum as a guest curator for this exhibition after her 2009 exhibition Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History<\/em>, 1955 to the Present. Commenting on Who Shot Sports<\/em>, Buckland says, \u201cToday, it is the photographers who give sports its indelible image... Seeing athletic greatness, we both recognize our personal physical limitations and delight in bodies and minds taken to new heights. To play and to watch sports is to be in the moment. Still photographers are masters of moments.\u201d Some of the names that have work contributing to the exhibition are Richard Avedon, Dr. Harold Edgerton, \u00c9tienne-Jules Marey, Edward Muybridge, George Sill, and Andy Warhol, among others. Who Shot Sports<\/em> is on view at the Brooklyn Museum until January 8th, 2017.<\/p>\r\n

Photography has been drastically altered over the past 175 years. This curation explores the photo as a vast communication tool across many fields, showing a range of pieces from x-rays and scientific documentation, to conceptual art and early photojournalism. As stated in the Eastman Museum press release, \u201cas the modes and motives of camera imagery multiply, viewers continually learn new ways to read the information and assess the arguments in a photograph.\u201d The showing gives the audience a fascinating array of just how much sight reading has touched our cultures\u2019 recent history.<\/p>\r\n

A few months ago, we interviewed Deanna Templeton<\/a> about her new book, The Swimming Pool<\/em>,<\/a> out now via Thomas Campbell's Um Yeah Arts imprint<\/a>. Now, Thomas has directed a little short about the making of the book. <\/p>\r\n

From the publisher: The Swimming Pool<\/em> is a new photographic essay from California-based street photographer Deanna Templeton (born 1969) that departs from her usual style to offer an expressive, intimate view of the human form underwater. The series was born after an impromptu nude swimming-pool shoot of husband and artist Ed Templeton, which spurred an eight-year journey in the study of light, expression and the enigma of water.<\/p>\r\n

Shooting on black and white and color film, as well as polaroids, Templeton sent friends or at least friends of friends into the pool to be photographed in their truest form. Unlike her street photography, in which subjects were often strangers, Templeton found that creating these portraits required more intimacy and connection\u2014a feeling that is apparent throughout every image in the series, which show strong, liberated individuals, confident and at ease in their most beautiful and vulnerable of moments.<\/p>","video":"
