The exhibition will show 25 cibachrome and silver gelatin prints taken throughout the city of New York and its surroundings between 1970 and 2006. Born in Brooklyn, Gottfried took her first photographs in 1969 at the legendary Woodstock Festival; capturing unusual and striking moments would become her trademark. Always drawn to the diverse communities she knew while growing up, Gottfried went on to document the vast diversity of New York City. Beginning with Coney Island and Crown Heights, she expanded her radius to the Lower East Side, Spanish Harlem, and then to other regions of the United States. Arlene Gottfried depicts her fellow New Yorkers with intimacy and valiance, revealing fascinating portraits of people who seem to operate outside of conventional rules and assumptions. For one photograph, a nude bodybuilder posed next to a Hasidic man and proudly announced, \u201cTake my picture with him; I am Jewish too.\u201d Elsewhere a man was sunbathing on a lounge chair in the middle of the West Side Highway, or a boy grinning in the freezer of a butcher\u2019s shop in Boston. Through her special blend of the personal with the peculiar, the photographer forges a profound connection with her subjects, and draws viewers into remarkable and surprising situations. Today, the artist is looking back onto a photographic journal spanning more than 40 years - soulful and emotionally charged, wild and crazy, nostalgic and touching. Los Angeles-based artist John Houck<\/a> explores human perception and memory using both analog to digital technologies. By simultaneously resisting and embracing technology, Houck exploits the ambiguity between the artist\u2019s hand and his digital tools, engaging viewers to grapple with what<\/em> exactly they are looking at. His background in architecture informs his manipulation of space through the photographing and successive re-photographing of objects. Through Houck\u2019s process of re-photographing, he \u201ccomplicates the image\u201d until he reaches a final composition and refers to the result as \u201ca photograph of itself,\u201d forcing a collapse of spatial and temporal relationships within a single image.<\/p>\r\n

In his most recent work, Houck rigorously arranges and photographs keepsakes given to him by his parents. Subsequent iterations of re-arrangement and re-photography create spatially layered images that evoke the complexity and malleable nature of memory, and show how objects laden with personal histories can drive the imagination and inspire new narratives. Houck refers to these images as \u201caggregate photographs,\u201d emblems of the manner in which imagination and recollection alter and distort our views of our past lives.<\/p>\r\n

Spanning his remarkable career from one of his earliest photographs made in the desert of Arizona in 1962 to his newest collage made in a Mayan village in Belize in 2016, the exhibition examines a cross-section of Lyon\u2019s important and varied body of work. Continuing in the tradition of Walker Evans and Robert Frank, Lyon forged a new style of documentary photography, described as \u201cNew Journalism,\u201d where the photographer immerses himself in his subject\u2019s world. From images of the Civil Rights movement made during his early days as one of the first staff photographers for SNCC, to his classic series The Bikeriders<\/em> documenting a Chicago biker gang, to his in-depth study of Texan prisons in 1966-67, Danny Lyon has documented the harsh realities of American life for the past 50 years. Each of these projects was accompanied by books, which have become classics in the field.<\/p>\r\n

Undercover Cars<\/em> is Woodside\u2019s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles and features a collection of photographs from his recently published book of the same title. The work spans five years of shooting and represents a photographic study of covered cars that Woodside spotted while traveling around the world and also living in Southern California.<\/p>\r\n

A Handful of Dust<\/em> is David Campany\u2019s<\/a> speculative history of the last century, and a visual journey through some of its unlikeliest imagery. Let\u2019s suppose the modern era begins in October of 1922. A little French avant-garde journal publishes a photograph of a sheet of glass covered in dust. The photographer is Man Ray, the glass is by Marcel Duchamp. At first they call it a view from an aeroplane. Then they call it Dust Breeding<\/em>. It\u2019s abstract, it\u2019s realist. It\u2019s an artwork, it\u2019s a document. It\u2019s revolting and compelling. Cameras must be kept away from dust but they find it highly photogenic. The very same month, a little English journal publishes TS Eliot\u2019s poem The Waste Land<\/em>. \u201cI will show you fear in a handful of dust.\u201d And what if dust is really the key to the ensuing decades? Why do we dislike it? Is it cosmic? We are stardust, after all. Is it domestic? Inevitable and unruly, dust is the enemy of the modern order, its repressed other, its nemesis. But it has a story to tell from the other side.<\/p>\r\n

The connections range far and wide, from aerial reconnaisance and the American dustbowl to Mussolini\u2019s final car journey and the wars in Iraq. A Handful of Dust<\/em> features works by Man Ray, John Divola, Sophie Ristelhueber, Mona Kuhn, Xavier Ribas, Nick Waplington, Edward Ruscha, Jeff Wall and many others, alongside anonymous press photos, postcards, magazine spreads and movies.<\/p>\r\n

The exhibition originated at Le Bal, Paris, continues at the Pratt Photography Gallery<\/a>  and then travels to Whitechapel Gallery, London; and the Moderna Museet, Stockholm. MACK Books published a Handful of Dust<\/em> by David Campany in 2014, 2016<\/p>\r\n

Opening reception and book signing will follow the artists's lecture that starts 6:30-8 P.M. on September 14, 2016 at the Pratt Photography
