With the convenience and ubiquity of computers and smartphones, the majority of photographic images are being recorded digitally rather than on film. As this transformation has broadened access to photographic images\u2014both in making and in viewing\u2014in many contexts it has also obviated the need for photographic prints. Snapshooters, photojournalists, and commercial photographers rarely produce material objects as the final step in their process. As a consequence, photographs in the form of image-bearing sheets of paper are scarce outside of the art world.<\/p>\r\n
Because personal and collective memories are so inextricably intertwined with photographs\u2014the result of the medium\u2019s progressive saturation of everyday life for the past century and a half\u2014this revolutionary change in the production and dissemination of photographic images is altering society\u2019s relationship to memory.<\/p>\r\n
In the midst of this change, many contemporary photographers are making work that addresses, either directly or obliquely, the potential consequences of the medium\u2019s metamorphosis. Some artists dig deep into photographic materials as though searching for the locus of memory, while others incorporate found snapshots into their work as virtual talismans of recollection. Both kinds of work highlight the presence of the photographic object and function as self-conscious meditations on photography\u2019s ongoing reorganization of our mental and physical landscape.<\/p>\r\n

What makes Moon\u2019s work unique is her aim to showcase character rather than the shallowness of mere beauty which plagues the fashion industry. Her independent magazine A Nice Magazine<\/a><\/em> was created with this intent and is full of collaborative work; including that of Tyrone Lebon, who she worked with for 2 years. Thankfully, in the late \u201870s Slash Magazine<\/em> documented and captured the spirit of the first wave of the Los Angeles punk scene (along with reggae, rockabilly, blues and new wave and beyond) like no other publication. Created initially as an alternative media outlet to other mainstream newspapers and \u201calternative\u201d weeklies, Slash\u2019s approach, design and attitude went unrivaled. The magazine\u2019s first logo (in true punk style) was written in a sloppy handwriting resembling dripping blood, intrusive in the way it permeated your mind and left a lasting impression. The magazine was co-founded by Steve Samiof and Melanie Niseen, with Claude Bessy aka \u201cKickboy Face\u201d and Philomena \u201cPhilly\u201d Winstanley, each integral in establishing its identity. It lasted a brief 3 years, printing 29 issues before morphing into a record label. Just the right amount of time to not burn out or run dry of unique content. Plus, as many people account, the scene was ending or, in some people\u2019s eyes, already over the same year publication ended in 1980. Now, 36 years later, Hat & Beard Press<\/a> have compiled in a massive undertaking a whopping 496-page book in homage to this underground classic. It\u2019s been weeks and I\u2019m still attempting to sift through and absorb the incredible depth of content. Edited by J.C.
