Gardaf was deeply inspired by and followed the explorations of documentary photographers like Stephen Shore or Joel Steinfeld. Gaining experience in the Atelier of Alfredo Caliz in Tangier only reassured him that it is the photographic image that he wants to pursue professionally in his life.<\/p>\r\n

In November 2014, a mid-career retrospective of his books was organized by Light Work in Syracuse, NY. The exhibition featured more than twenty books, including self-published works and numerous volumes from a variety of publishers. In 2011, Meeks and publisher Kevin Messina<\/em> (Silas Finch) co-founded Orchard Journal<\/em>, which was established as a collaborative conversation between artist, subject and viewer. He is currently at work on a new set of Journals<\/em> under the title Dumbsaint.<\/em> <\/em>Meeks is a 2016 recipient of the Siskind Fellowship Grant.<\/p>\r\n

One hundred years ago, the slogan \u201cTRENTON MAKES \/ THE WORLD TAKES\u201d was welded onto the Lower Trenton Bridge across the Delaware River. The letters are nine feet high and lit up in red neon at night. These words have become a trademark of the city, and a curiosity for the millions of Americans traveling to and from New York by car and train. Whetstone photographed the Lower Trenton Bridge in several formats, focusing on structural elements, letters of the slogan, portraits of drivers, birds, and the landscape to mine both cultural and physical infrastructure. He has dismantled the slogan into individual letters to make new words, phrases, and sounds to reflect contemporary aspirations, realities, and mantras. Through a process he calls \u201caggregate contact printing,\u201d Whetstone has created large silver gelatin prints comprised of multiple negatives that present new words and images. For example, \u201cHeel, Hand, Knee\u201d (83 x 49\u201d contact print) incorporates 186 individual negatives.<\/p>\r\n

At the time of the sign\u2019s installation, the manufacture and design of suspension bridges was Trenton\u2019s most important industry. Trenton\u2019s Roebling Factory was responsible for designing and producing the century\u2019s powerful symbols of American architecture, ingenuity, and infrastructure \u2013 including the Brooklyn Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge. The decline of American manufacturing over the last fifty years has transformed Trenton\u2019s slogan into an omen. Today what is left behind is the city itself, reckoning with the world\u2019s claim on it, in a time when many Americans are questioning connections and metaphorical In an era where excessive retouching in fashion photography is the norm, there is something beyond in Lindbergh\u2019s work that makes his subjects so interesting. Lindbergh does not pay too much attention to the clothes. In his own words, \u201cIf you take out the fashion and artifice, you can then see the real person\u201d.<\/p>\r\n

 Peter Lindbergh is an influential contemporary photographer who continues to work with the most prestigious fashion brands and magazines. On exhibition from now until February 12th 2017,  Peter Lindbergh. A Different Vision on Fashion Photography<\/strong><\/a> at Kunsthal Rotterdam museum. Iconic and influential, the names are familiar, John Baldessari, Lee Friedlander, James Turrel, Robert Frank , Cartier-Bresson and countless more. These people became Maclean\u2019s subjects and his photographs gracefully represent each one of them in a tasteful reflection of that artist\u2019s aesthetic, while still leaving his own imprint. Having done extensive research on each artist to better understand their beginnings, influences and discoveries, Maclean attempts to unravel the influence and connection that their work has made. In total, the photographer traversed the globe making twenty-five stops to various cities and towns.<\/p>\r\n

In his own words, \u201cHometowns takes a reflexive look at this process of encoding. It began life as a line in my notebook: \u2018Photograph the hometowns of your heroes\u2019 \u2014 an idea for a layered investigation into the places which influenced those artists whose work has coloured my own. Two years later, that line has become a sixty-five-image, photo-homage to a unique group of artists who have been my own mentors-by-proxy, and an endeavour to untangle the strands which connect me to their work<\/em>.\"<\/p>\r\n

Hometowns <\/em>will be exhibitied at the Format Festival<\/a> in April, 2017.
