Lisa Linvay’s stunning family photographs show the physical and emotional effects of an entire family dealing with their mothers deteriorating mental health.

In her series Hold Together, Chicago-based photographer, Lisa Linvay explores the physical and emotional effects of an entire family dealing with their mothers deteriorating mental health. Shot over the course of seven years, Linvay’s mother remains absent from any of the images, but instead presents an array of photographs with her father, sister, and two brothers, set to a deteriorating domestic appearance. In her own words Linvay says of this project, “ This work represents an extended look at the physical and emotional currents within our home. The images are a visual representation of the internal dilemmas associated with this entropic state. The photographs expose how my mother’s health influences the condition of the space and emotional well being of my family members. This is an exploration of how individual identity is shaped and altered within our familial relationship.”
