Before deciding to become an artist, photographer and painter Paul Garcia went to school for biochemistry and then once again for journalism. His scientific and documentary background is clearly evident in his series 9, a series of nine compositions comprised of nine separate images in a grid, each with a defined relationship that serves as the image's title. "Every photograph is made of layers," he says. "The compositional side will always be the most important to me. I am happiest when an image hangs weightless around its centre, when random patterns are drawn to order, and that moment of inertia is real and felt[…] I see the world in a very clear and simple way. I think we are all mapping our own patterns."
