Mark Bradford is an LA artist that grew up and still currently resides in South Central Los Angeles. His practice emerged from many environmental inputs. Growing up around a family of seamstresses and working at his mother's hair salon before going off to art school, Bradford's use of materials and sensitivity to the imminent characteristics of these materials appears to have evolved from these influences to his development. The touch of fabric, the clippings of many posters and billboard papers collaged upon the canvases of varying size, some stretched and others not, exhibiting degrees of emphasis on fabric. The works compile tension between chaos and order, as the textile influenced canvases struggle between degrees of tactile sensation that must be felt through an attentive visual investigation. Mark Bradford's mixed media collages are currently on view at SFMoMA until June 17th.
