For Gallery Wendi Norris' third solo exhibition with Tomokazu Matsuyama, the artist will present a selection of new paintings and will debut a series of steel sculptures. Many of these pieces will feature the expressionless figures derived from traditional Japanese ink techniques that are characteristic of his past work. While the paintings will be dynamic and multi-colored, the flat, freestanding sculptures will be rendered in monochromatic gold or silver. These sculptures represent an exciting new direction in Matsuyama’s practice—they will depict subject matter inspired by a Louis XIV bust, a monument to Napoleon and ancient Greek statues. With this collection of new works, Matsuyama traces the canon of the history of Western art while filtering it through his idiosyncratic aesthetic, where the flatness of Eastern painting meets the bold vigor of American pop.
