Three Films by Roy Lichtenstein at the Whitney

January 30, 2012

Currently on view at the Whitney until February 12th are three films that Roy Lichtenstein produced during two-week residency at the Hollywood Universal Studios special effects lab back in February of 1969. Unseen since their original exhibition at LACMA in 1971, the three films utilize a grainy, low fidelity production alongside bright, simplified pop imagery that characterizes Lichtenstein's work. Developed after his most iconic comic book paintings, the films investigate the landscape in 35 mm film in a way that reveals Lichtenstein's fascination with cinema and form.
