Underdogs Gallery in Lisbon just opened a new solo exhibition titled Act and Process by January 2009 Juxtapoz cover artist WK Interact. The New York based French artist uses a selection of 20th century American press photographs as a basis for his art, which he began implementing in the 90s on the streets of Manhattan. These dynamic images bring a sense movement to his wall paintings, an otherwise static work. He also painted a mural in Lisbon at the same time, the finished product of which can be seen in the gallery.
The artist selected a variety of photos from the 1960’s and 70’s., like an unused John Belushi mugshot taken on the set of Blues Brothers, or a photo of a random car accident, to convey dramatic emotions. Afterwards, he adds a layers of his own art and illustrations that have a connection to his own life, resulting in black and white finished pieces that put his experience into dialogue with the photographs. In his own words, “We all struggle somehow in life, and I want to show the reality of life. We have our challenges, but in the end, we can overcome and succeed. That is what I want to communicate with this exhibition.”
