After 2 years in the works, Axel Void will be presenting his unique project, a poetic commentary on the past, present, and future of Wynwood, The show, titled Home, will take place on the 14th and 15th of April in an abandoned residential home on 25th street in Wynwood, before its demolition, together with the paintings, on the 16th of April.
Seeing this massive and cruel change taking place around him, the Miami-based artist came up with an idea to memorialize the last standing house on the once-lively 25th street. The exhibition explores the life of a Puerto Rican couple who moved there in 1962 with their two sons and remained in the home until their last days. Over the last 2 years, Void collected their photographs and painted a series of canvases that depict some of their memorable moments. Patiently waiting for the inevitable end of this story, this poetic install will be revealed in the former family home, only 2 days before its scheduled destruction. With the actual act of demolition being the finisage of the show, the project aims to contextualize the euphemistic "renovation and improvement" processes taking place globally.––Sasha Bogojev
"This project intends to underline the changes our generation has brought to this area and our communities generally. The area is now largely developed and gentrified as an arts district, and that gentrification is spreading to other neighborhoods like Little Haiti and Overtown. This is a tribute to this home and neighborhood. Intending to celebrate and preserve the lives of the everyday families from the past, and embrace the ones we still have in our present." - Axel Void
