The Beests on the Beach: Theo Jansen's New (And Improved) Wind-Powered Sculptures

August 24, 2018

Just once, for one time in our lives, do we want to be on a beach when Theo Jansen has one of his wind-powered sculptures in movement. This summer, Jansen released a video of his new "Strandbeest Evolution," showcasing new works in his series of completely wind-powered, moveable works (literally, made only from plastic tubing and zip-ties). Two videos he has recently released showcase not only the evolution of his most famous "Strandbeest," but also his new UMINAMI, which he notes is "the new strandbeest (that) doesn't have hinging joints like the classical strandbeests. So they don't get sand in their joints and you don't have to lubricate them."
