Tokyo's Gallery Target is approaching the opening to their latest show Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow, a debut solo exhibition by Takahiro Hida AKA Hi-Dutch. The show comprises of new works created using Hida's surfboard repair skills and are a direct extension of the artist's everyday life, beach visits, and daily routines.

Hi-Dutch is a Japanese artist whose practice relies on perfecting craft to the point of becoming art. Combining his surfboard-repairing skills with environmental awareness, the artist developed a practice in which he recycles collected beach waste inside his artwork. Found materials such as driftwood, yarn, and bits of plastic are all used in his creative process, suggesting the final outlook of finished works. Involved in creative production from various positions, he continuously seeks an original visual expression via two-dimensional, video and spatial designs.

The exhibition that will open on February 1st including his large masterpiece "Circle," created from resin and yarn, along with new works from driftwood and trash as well as works exhibited at a group show that traveled the US last year. The show will also include the "Fish that ate marine plastic waste," direct commentary series on the issue of plastic waste in the ocean and its effect on the marine environment. The gallery also plans to release a limited edition silkscreen print and products designed by Hi-Dutch.––Sasha Bogojev
