Parallel roads lead in the same direction, but can offer different points of view as they reach their destination. Mexican painter-printmaker Daniel Acosta and American metalsmith-visual artist Tavo Montavo worked in tandem to collaborate on a journey of mind and body in a series of battle and ballet that they call Parallels. The prints are made from acid-etched, hand-cut brass shapes that are turned into metal sculptures. The results can look strong or fragile. Each artist brings a unique history and technique to create dynamic creatures who appear poised for prayer or action, their limbs coiled in repose or ready to spring. Or maybe all of the above. Parallel roads can lead to conflict or connection, but they’re worth exploring.

Parallels will be on view at Stone Sparrow September 18 through October 12, 2019.
