Artist and ocean advocate Courtney Mattison creates large scale ceramic installations and sculptures inspired by science and marine biology. Her intricate hand-crafted porcelain works celebrate the fragile beauty of endangered coral reef ecosystems and promote awareness to conserve and protect our natural world.
The pieces are delicate ceramic portrayals of sea life, arranged into larger organic installations. In her series Our Changing Seas III, she sculpted and enameled a bright and colorful center of wild creatures, which fades to white coral at its edges, offering an apt metaphor for our threatened coral reefs.
Mattison currently has a solo show at Virginia MOCA.
