After a thrilling grand opening last month, Chinatown’s brand new Gregorio Escalante Gallery gears up Angelenos for a taste of what we have in store in the coming months with “Portal to the Future.” In his years spent since cofounding Juxtapoz Magazine and across many other instrumental art world beginnings, gallery owner Greg Escalante has cast a wide net of international scale, and pulled in culture from some of the most influential figures in lowbrow and highbrow art. And with this fresh venture of his Chinatown gallery, Escalante will give us an exciting hint as to just how wide that net of inspiration is and what we can expect.

With such a rich history that has helped to shape what we know about tattoo art, both subversive and popular street culture, comic art, graffiti, folk, surf and skate art, printmaking, and even how all of these things apply to the fine art world and its contemporaries, it is safe to say that Escalante has plenty from which to pull as he begins plotting the next moves in his gorgeous and celebrated new space. Propelled by the soaring excitement of Chinatown’s other galleries, Escalante plans to stamp his signature curatorial style by tapping artists like Chaz Bojorquez, Kenny Scharf, Robbie Conal, Banksy, Nychos, and Roger Dean to fill his new space. “Portal to the Future” is the exhibit that will preview the coming months In a show that will pair an eccentric style of curation with a deep connection to what makes the current art landscape such an intelligent and vibrant scene, “Portal to the Future” sets out to prove that a historied network with a fresh new scaffold for creation is a place where no idea is out of reach.
