WISH ATL just opened a gallery space in Atlanta, kicking off with their inaugural exhibition, Martha Cooper: Then & Now, featuring the photography of the legendary documentarian, Martha Cooper. Of course Cooper is known as one of the first (and really, most stalwart and continued) documentary photographers of graffiti and street art culture, having created a unique thread of trends and artists that have taken graffiti from streets around the world to the international phenomenon (and commercial enterprise) it is today. Martha has seen it all.
Then & Now features over 40 new editions of Martha Cooper’s legendary 1970s and 1980s graffiti and hip-hop photographs, including iconic black-and-white photos from her books “New York State of Mind,” “Street Play,” and “Tokyo Tattoo.” The show also features Cooper’s most recent portraits of contemporary street artists at work, including a collection of photos taken during Living Walls Atlanta in 2012 and 2013 (to this day, Living Walls is one of the best street art festivals the US has ever had). And Living Walls organizer, Monica Campana, is the gallery curator here at WISH ATL. We can't wait to keep up with what they are doing down in Atlanta!
