The Wilson's

May 12, 2014

Jane and Louise Wilson are architectural photographers who focus on dilapidation and images devoid of humans. They have travelled throughout the world to document specific places which have a strong connection to the past, often relating to violence or war. A project statement on buildings in New Zealand sums it up well:New Zealand's devastating loss of manpower in World War I and a state-sponsored eugenics program that isolated young women in hospitals, including the one documented here. Not much of this comes across in the piece itself. Instead, the specifics of the images add up to a larger truth, conveying a diffuse sense of human folly and cost that is sad beyond words. The Wilson’s have recently been working in video installations.
