Sandy Carson is a Scottish photographer currently living and working in the United States. His project We Were There explores the relationship between concerts and the fans who attend them. The area between the stage and the barrier is usually used by photographers to take close up shots of the musicians, but here, Carson has turned the camera around, pointing his lens at the fans. Shot at various music festivals in Austin, Texas, Carson captured a wide range of music genres. From country to rock and punk to pop, the fans at these shows have been captured in their natural habitat, completely uninhibited and seemingly unaware of the camera pointed right at them. "Without the band" he says "there are no fans; without the fans, there is no band. One just cannot exist without the other."
