Valerio Platania – Base

July 07, 2014

Documenting enormous industrial parks situated in the Spanish desert, locations where people travel to find ‘bulk-buy’ supplies for their homes or new ‘affordable’ furniture to fill them. Valerio Platania’s images feature settings largely uncluttered by human interaction. Clean, structured and organised, painted in faded pastel hues these gigantic stores stand strong as a symbol of the enduring consumerist promise their founders had once envisioned. The expected sheen of a glossy finish has quietly worn away, lending a thought-provoking detail that contradicts the language of capitalism. A question of space prevails and how we choose to encompass it.
