Following a solo exhibition at Superchief Gallery in New York last month, photographer Justin Aversano has released a compendium from his Twin Flames series. After photographing 100 twins from around the world using different formats, he has chronicled the journey in a new book, in a special homage to his mother and lost fraternal twin.
Last month's exhibition at Superchief Gallery explored Aversano’s collection of recorded stories about 100 pairs of twins, recounting a consummate journey, expanding the boundaries of social studies, culture, and tradition in an exposition of the beauty, comedy, tragedy and just plain humanity of ‘twinhood’. The exhibition showcased the incisive visual style of Aversano’s portraits, poems, and polaroids, shown in large, full-color reproductions. Divided into chapters containing interviews with Aversano’s subjects, the accompanying context for the series, as well as personal stories that inform the twins' personalities and conceptions of identity.
"For Twin Flames, I photographed 100 sets of twins to create a body of work focused on the phenomena of 'twindom' through an immersive portrait survey. 'Twindom' has a deep root in storytelling - its visuals representing shared experience, a reflected image of self, and our concept of belonging. Twins and multiple siblings provide a lens on the magic and causality of biology. By using three formats of film; Polaroid, 120mm, and 4x5 by focusing on the simple idea of seeking an “intentional phenomenology” by direct image making, I can facilitate a broad and reflexive photographic – Justin Aversano
