After living in Savannah, Georgia for the past four years, New England based photographer Kory Jean Kingsley developed a strong connection to the culture of the Southeast and to her day-to-day interactions with the people of the area. Focusing specifically on her exchanges with black men, Kingsley, a white female, addresses and challenges certain stereotypes from not only her own perspective, but from that of her subjects in her series To Be Here. Complementing gorgeously lit portraits of Savannah’s local boys and men with delicate imagery of flowering plants, Kingsley aims to showcase “the ease with which cultural barriers can be broken down.” She says: “I seek to direct my viewers attention in which we can view African American culture as beautiful and important part of society.” You can view the rest of the series on her website.
