For the Nu Project, photographers Matt Blum and Katy Kessler took a series of “honest” nude portraits of ordinary women, whom they nickname “un-models.” The project is an effort to highlight the beauty of all bodies, especially those that don’t fit into society’s strict definition of what is beautiful. The portraits use minimal makeup and “no glamour.” So far, Blum and Kessler have published one book of portraits, The Nu Project: Beauty in Every Body, and are currently raising funds to publish their second volume. For the book, Blum and Kessler do not screen the un-models for appearance and Blum actually doesn’t see images of the women before he shows up at their home for the photo shoot. During the shoots, the focus is on “subjects and their personalities, spaces, insecurities and quirks.” So far over 250 women from North and South America and Europe have posed for the book.
