During his four year career as a taxi cab driver in the Neath community of Wales, Mike Harvey photographed around 120 of his passengers. After having some friendly banter and an exchange of stories, Harvey would request permission to take their photograph and those that participated would have their fare waived as a thank you. “I wanted to document the lottery of people that occupied the taxi space, and the experiences that taxi driving gave me. Whether it be rushing a pregnant woman to hospital or being regaled stories of World War II by an elderly passenger, the taxi provided a space to meet, converse with, and learn from people, “says Harvey of this project. Shot entirely on a DSLR that Harvey kept in his glovebox, Taxi reveals the wide variety of characters the photographer and taxi cab drivers in general encounter over time.
