In September 2012, professional surfer Dan Malloy and two other friends decided to explore the California Coast by bike, strapping surfboards to racks and heading south with no specific destinations in mind. Speaking to Huck Magazine Malloy said, “We were on the road for two months in total, we weren’t cycling everyday though, we were just going to places and seeing what happened. We’d stop and surf if we saw a spot that looked good, we were totally self-sufficient so there was no timetable to be places. I’d say that of the places we stayed, about half were planned and half weren’t. “ Shooting only film, the surfer explains that it was a fun experiment not reviewing images all the time and making sure that you go that perfect picture. Describing it as a “transformative experience,” Malloy notes that the trip was one of the best of his life and their book Slow Is Fast is evidence of their travels.
