The striking and compelling images that make up Kirsten Luce’s newest body of work are irresistible in their presence.
An aerial photograph of several men huddled and scurrying through high vegetation or the outline of a helicopter behind a man running across a field are perturbing. Cleverly titled As Above, So Below, the Brooklyn-based photographer has been frequenting the hotbed of drug and human trafficking in the United States located in The Rio Grand Valley of Texas. As stated on her website, “A surge in resources from Homeland Security has more agents and assets concentrated in this region than ever before.” Traveling to Texas and Mexico often to make her images, Luce also occupied a position as the Adjunct Assistant Professor of Photojournalism at Columbia University and the Workshop Coordinator for the Foundry Photojournalism Workshop.
Luce has compiled a number of poignant and topical series revolving around the U.S/ Mexico border, Homeland Security, migrants, human trafficking, vigilant justice and more. Be sure to check them all out!
