In her #Blackfolk series, Brooklyn-based artist Elise Peterson collages photographs of black cultural icons with classical fine art works.

Bright, colorful and often exuberant, the pieces at once celebrate norm-pushing, political black people (Assata Shakur, Tupac, Aaliyah, and Audre Lorde, to name a few), and question notions of whiteness, body politics and radicality at the intersections of aesthetics and activism.
