"Drowning World" by Gideon Mendel

March 05, 2014

Gideon Mendel is a fascinating photographer, working uniquely with the medium. I became aware of his work during a recent triennial at the ICP. He has travelled the world to document different communities in the wake of severe flooding. The photographs are stills from his video, which are portraits of people within the community. There is something truly fascinating about watching these video-portraits, the subject has a more active role as they return the viewers gaze, scratch their arms, and slightly fidget in front of Mendel’s camera. Mendel has worked on other projects surrounding poverty and suffering throughout the world, predominantly within Africa.
